The North East region of England is often regarded as ‘the Cradle of English Christianity’, after the Holy Island of Lindisfarne became the home of England’s first settled Christian community. It was led by St. Aidan, who came from Iona in 635AD, and whose statue stands by Lindisfarne Priory ruins. Aidan was followed as Bishop of Lindisfarne by St. Cuthbert, who established the island as one of Europe’s important centres of learning. Holy Island is not only a centre of pilgrimage - its tranquillity, spirituality and scenic beauty attracts a multitude of visitors to its shores every year. Undoubtedly, it is the jewel in the crown of Northumberland.
