Revd Derek Seber and Ian Ball reported to the CTA Symposium in 2009 on recent work relating to multi-faith walks, rambles and pilgrimages. You can read Derek's notes on "creating multi-faith inter-denominational walks of faith, rambles, pilgrimages, hikes... anything to get faithful people off their backsides and into our glorious landscape, walking and talking together" here Multifaith Walks (Derek Seber). Ian's notes on "Brief Engagements, Processional Encounters" ("a simple method with multiple applications: Walking directly between two significant points") and thoughts on the development of pilgrimage routes are here Brief Engagements Flier (Ian Ball) and here Pilgrimage Notes (Ian Ball).
In his 'Pilgrimage notes' Ian Ball writes: "An essential requirement of a traditional pilgrimage is the going to and from the special place: the journey. Whilst this journey is usually to be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible the very fact that the pilgrim is preparing and leaving home and ‘normality’ means that the journey becomes a part of the pilgrimage process."
