The Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham’s Church History Project was set up in the late 1990s to provide an accurate historical and archaeological record for each church and church site within the Diocese. The recent award of a Heritage Lottery Grant has enabled this work to expand into both education and tourism under the heading of the Open Churches Project. Heather Sirrel, Church History & Open Churches Projects, reports "We provide quality educational materials for churches to use with a variety of ages and groups, particularly school visits. We produce various publications, including church guide leaflets and trail leaflets, to help welcome visitors and raise awareness of the local heritage value of these buildings. We also organise annual Open Churches Weekends where churches across the whole of Nottinghamshire can join together to open their doors to visitors."
